Straat van Sculpturen

The Street of Sculptures was first envisaged in 2004 by a number of keen art-lovers who also loved the Bijlmer district. Their dream was to create a trend-setting international art collection in the public areas of the Bijlmer. Why? Because of its space, its ethnic mix and the fact that it is such an unusual site for a public art collection. With help from a growing number of enthusiastic friends and sponsors, as well as art funds and local authorities, the idea soon developed into a fully fledged art project.

The Street of Sculptures art collection will be built up gradually in five temporary biennial exhibitions (2009-2017), each with a different curator. Fifteen to twenty artists will be invited to create a work of art for each exhibition, and five of these works will become a permanent part of the Street. In the space of ten years this will result in an unpredictable collection that reflects the outlook of five curators rather than just one. This approach will provide scope for experiment and up-and-coming talent. Permanent works made for previous exhibitions and ‘left behind’ in the Street can be recycled by a new curator with a new theme, and will thus acquire a new meaning. In this way the works of art will themselves become objects with a multi-faceted identity, and the Street of Sculptures collection-in-progress will remain a fascinating route to explore.

All art works of the ongoing Street of Sculptures will appear in the Virtual Street with an online representationt. Permanent works are pinpointed in a green colour and temporary works are marked in red.
